Maybe you’re thinking about getting insurance with a broker, or perhaps your point of contact for your insurance policy was an agent but is now a broker. Or you occasionally find yourself lying awake at night wondering “What exactly is a broker and what do they do?” Whatever the case, you’ve come to the right place — this is an explanation of who an insurance broker is, what they do, and why having one look after your insurance is a very good thing.

Broker vs. Agent

One way to explain who a broker is and what they do is to first explain who and what they are not. An insurance broker and an insurance agent are both people and/or organizations that work directly with clients and know a lot about insurance. That, however, is where the similarities end. The biggest difference between the two — and also one of the biggest benefits for those who have brokers — is that while an insurance agent acts on behalf of the insurance providers they represent, the insurance broker acts on behalf of the client.

The Broker’s Duty

The main duty of an insurance broker is to represent the client or policyholder; it is the broker’s responsibility to look out for their client, to understand the client’s unique insurance needs, and to represent the client in the search for the right coverage for them.

The Broker Advantage

Having your insurance handled by a broker has several important benefits. Here are a bunch of them.

Flexibility

The company — or brokerage — that the broker works for will be associated with several different insurance companies, while an insurance agent generally represents a single insurance company. Being associated with multiple insurance companies gives the broker much more flexibility in finding the best and least expensive policy for each client.

Knowledge + Understanding

Because the broker is your representative and because they are very knowledgeable about insurance, they will be in a unique position of having a strong understanding of the finer details of your policy and how they relate specifically to your situation, so they will be able to answer any questions or concerns you may have about your insurance policy.

Impartiality

All of the insurance companies we are associated with are great choices, and each of them wants your business and so each one will want you to believe they’re the best choice for you. Your broker gains no benefit from selecting a policy for you from any particular insurance company, so their focus will be on which company’s policies suit your needs and which one has the lowest price.

Claims Support

Fingers crossed that you never have to make a claim. But if the situation does arise, having an insurance broker makes a big difference. For the most part, situations that would involve an insurance claim — like a car accident or a burst water pipe in your house — can be very stressful. It can be hard to think logically in a moment of crisis. Having an insurance broker is a big help because they will be focusing on making sure you’re okay, and giving you a calm, logical assessment of the situation based on your situation and their understanding of your insurance policy. Based on this understanding, they might even suggest that you get a cost estimate before having them contact the insurance company because, depending on how close the repair costs are to your deductible, it might make sense to not make a claim and just pay for the damages yourself. This would keep your premiums from going up and maintain your no-claims discount. With an insurance agent, as soon as you call, the incident is put on your insurance record, and could lead to higher premiums — even if you decide not to make a claim.
